Ceramic blanket is one of the fireproof insulation materials that are being used day by day. Ceramic blanket shows very good heat resistance. Ceramic blanket is produced in different types and with different thicknesses. This material is fireproof, flexible and has a good price compared to many used insulations. In this article, we are going to examine the ceramic blanket, its uses and features. Follow us until the end of this article.

What is a ceramic blanket?

The main material of ceramic blankets is ceramic fibers that are interwoven in the form of a blanket. In order to increase the insulation level of these blankets, the building materials are melted at high temperature and then the blanket is made in order to increase the purity of the blanket building materials and its resistance to heat. Usually, they make ceramic blankets with three different quality grades. These three degrees are as follows:

  • Commercial standard
  • High purity
  • zirconia

The fibers of these blankets are connected by needlework without using glue. On average, these blankets withstand up to 1200 degrees Celsius. According to the degree of quality, thickness and density, their resistance to temperature will be slightly different. The thickness of these blankets is 1 to 2 inches and its density is 64, 96 and 128.

All kinds of ceramic blankets

In addition to the degree of quality and density that divides ceramic blankets into different types, there is another division. In this classification, ceramic blankets are divided into the following three categories:

  • Inorganic alkaline silicate wool: This type of blankets contain amounts of zinc oxide, manganese and calcium, and their temperature tolerance is lower than the other two types, around 1000 degrees.
  • Aluminum silicate wool: These blankets are obtained from the combination of alumina and silica. The temperature tolerance of this type is higher than the first type of ceramic blankets.
  • Polycrystalline wool: In this type of ceramic blankets, aluminum oxide is used in large quantities. Then this oxide is transformed into polycrystalline wool during processes. The temperature tolerance of this type of ceramic blankets is higher than the previous two types and is around 1300 degrees Celsius.

Features of ceramic blanket

In addition to elasticity and high resistance to heat and temperature shocks, these blankets have other properties as follows:

  • Low heat storage
  • Low installation cost
  • Easy installation
  • High resistance to electric shock
  • High resistance to sound
  • size change
  • Suitable filling capability
  • High resistance to industrial oils
  • low weight
  • High resistance to mechanical vibrations
  • High tensile strength

Application of ceramic blanket

Ceramic blanket has many uses. These flexible insulating materials can be cut into much smaller pieces and used to insulate gaskets, seals, and small components. Below are some of the uses of this product:

Furnace lining

One of the most important applications of ceramic blankets is their use in thermal system lining. This type of insulating material is used to insulate furnaces used in industry, such as induction furnaces, electric arc furnaces, bush furnaces, etc. One of the important things that guarantees the quality of the products in the furnaces is to keep the temperature of the furnaces constant. Due to the high temperature tolerance of the ceramic blanket, these blankets are used for lining the ovens, and with the use of these blankets, the entire seams of the oven are covered.

Insulation sealing

Due to the fact that these insulating materials are easily cut to the desired size, it can be easily used for all kinds of heat sealing and expansion joints.

Use in buildings

In addition to insulating against heat, ceramic blankets are also insulating against sound. For this reason, in the interior walls of many buildings, this insulation is used to prevent sound from passing to other rooms or floors.

Other applications

  • Insulation of casting nozzles
  • Insulation of burners
  • Insulation of exhaust pipes of cars
  • Acoustic insulation of turbines
  • Safety clothing such as firemen’s clothing
  • Insulation of bottles
  • Filtration, separation
  • The use of ceramic blankets in the insulation of pipes and…

last word

Ceramic blankets are a type of insulation materials that are included in the category of fireproof insulation fabrics. Reasonable price and flexibility, reusability, easy installation, etc. are among the features that, along with high thermal tolerance, have made this insulation material one of the most widely used insulation materials in the industry. The purchase price of any type of ceramic blanket is different according to its thickness, density and quality.
