History of Lenovo
Lenovo Group Limited, often abbreviated to Lenovo, is a Chinese multinational technology company specializing in the design, manufacture and marketing of consumer electronics, personal computers. Software, business solutions and related services. The products produced by this company include desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, workstations, servers, supercomputers, electronic storage devices, IT management software and smart TVs. Its best-known brands include the business line of IBM ThinkPad laptop computers, the consumer lines of IdeaPad, Yoga, and Legion laptop computers, and the IdeaCentre and ThinkCentre desktop computer lines.
Lenovo was founded in Beijing on November 1, 1984 as Legend by a team of engineers including Danny Levy. This company, which initially specialized in the field of television, migrated to the production and marketing of computers. Lenovo grew to become the market leader in China, raising nearly US$30 million in an initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Since the 1990s, Lenovo has increasingly diversified into the PC market, making a number of corporate acquisitions, most notably the acquisition and integration of most of IBM’s PC business and x86-based server business, as well as the creation of its own smartphone.
Lenovo operates in more than 60 countries and sells its products in about 180 countries. Its operational headquarters are in Morrisville, North Carolina, USA. It has research centers in Beijing, Chengdu, Yamato (Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan), Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Morrisville (North Carolina, USA), and also owns Lenovo NEC Holdings, a joint venture with NEC that markets personal computers. Japan IBM Think-line systems are developed exclusively in Yamato and Morrisville.
The meaning of the name Lenovo
In the first 20 years of its activity, the English name of this company was “Legend”. In 2002, Yang Yuanqing decided to drop the English name Legend to expand beyond the Chinese domestic market. “Legend” is already used by many businesses around the world whose products and services may or may not be related to technology. Because of this, it would be impossible to register in many jurisdictions outside of China. In April 2003, the company publicly announced its new English name “Lenovo” with an advertising campaign that included large billboards and prime-time television commercials. The name “Lenovo” is a combination of “Le” which stands for Legend and “novo” which means “new” in Latin. Lenovo spent 18 million yuan on an eight-week TV advertising campaign. The billboards featured the Lenovo logo against a blue sky with the slogan, “Greatness depends on your mindset.” By the end of 2003, Lenovo spent a total of 200 million yuan on rebranding.
