Nvidia has issued an unusual statement and announced that the release of the RTX 4080 graphics card with 12 GB of internal memory has been delayed due to problems with the naming of this product.

According to the plans, the RTX 4080 12GB graphics card was supposed to be released at the same time as the more powerful RTX 4080 16GB model on November 16 (November 25); But since the unveiling of the 40 series last month, there have been many rumors about the release of the RTX 4080 12GB model. In response to the controversy, Nvidia admitted that the RTX 4080 12GB graphics card was not named correctly and that it was confusing to offer 2 GPUs with the same 4080 name. Nvidia announced in part of its statement:

“The RTX 4080 12GB graphics card is a great product; But the naming pattern used for it was not correct. Having 2 GPUs with the same 4080 name is a source of confusion for users. Therefore, we postpone the release of the RTX 4080 12GB model to another time. The RTX 4080 16GB graphics card is an amazing product and its release on November 16 will be a delight for gamers in all regions of the world.

Since the introduction of the RTX 4080 12GB card, the naming pattern of the RTX 4080 series has always been a point of contention among the media and consumers. The naming scheme used by Nvidia suggests that the only difference between the RTX 4080 12GB and RTX 4080 16GB graphics cards is their graphics memory capacity. However, in reality, the processing power of the RTX 4080 12GB model is significantly lower and the number of CUDA cores in it is 27% less than that of the RTX 4080 16GB. Also, the width of the memory bus has been reduced in this model. As a result, the RTX 4080 12GB graphics card should have a completely different performance compared to the larger RTX 4080 16GB model. This issue is also quite evident in some performance charts provided by Nvidia.

Although the release of desktop graphics cards with similar names and different capabilities by Nvidia is not unprecedented; But it should be noted that a major part of the confusion can be seen in the naming pattern of laptop GPUs. The RTX 4080 12GB is probably the most obvious example of misleading customers with similar names.

According to the report of the Gamers Nexus website, it seems that the relaunch of the RTX 4080 12GB graphics card will also seek to adjust its price in addition to changing the name of this product. Currently, one of the popular theories is that Nvidia will once again return to the naming pattern of RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti; But there is still no definite information in this regard.

Although this action is a win for customers and the right decision on Nvidia’s part; But such an action will probably not be very pleasant for business partners producing custom graphics cards of Nvidia. These companies were in the final stages of production, packaging and marketing of the RTX 4080 12GB card; But now they have to go through this whole process or a major part of it again. This action will be critical to aligning the product with the new name and pricing. However, according to reports, Nvidia will pay part of the costs related to these changes to its business partners.

The release of the RTX 4080 16GB graphics card is still on the company’s agenda, and this product will be launched on November 25 with a base price of $1199.
