The new generation of Peugeot 408 was introduced

The new generation Peugeot 408 version 2023, which is a completely new model, was introduced today. This car has a fastback design that is currently only used by regular Peugeot 308 hatchbacks and Peugeot 3008 SUVs.

This car, which was shown for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, competes with the best SUVs, hatchbacks and sedans. This model has aerodynamic features, enough coupe-like space, good driving.

The new-generation Peugeot 408 is set to launch in the UK at the start of the new year with a £43,250 exclusive as 50 models and will be sold as a 222bhp plug-in hybrid version. It’s just one of three engines offered with the 408 range.

This car model uses the EMP2 308 modular feature. The Peugeot 408 is 4690mm long and 1480mm tall, making it 440mm longer and 40mm taller than the 308. It can be said that this amount is satisfactory here. It took seven years to make this product because at first it was considered a bit disruptive, but it managed to attract the attention of the regulatory people.

The project manager, Pierre-Paul Mattei, said that the power to move without enough space in the car made this not seem possible. He also mentioned:

After applying this feature to a classic fastback like the Peugeot 508, we see that the center column of the car starts to lower, but here the back of the rear door makes it easier to access the back space of the car.

The Peugeot grille here is also the same as the rest of its generation, but it has been given a more modern shape, and the more we move towards the body, the more prominent the vertical color pattern becomes. This grille is also good for other generations of electric cars and will probably be used again in the future.

The interior is developed here; Designers were able to make a car called 408 with the best parts of 308. In this car, the latest i-Cockpit design is used, such as a digital screen and a 10.0-inch touch screen that can be connected to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Car manufacturers have also used extensive storage space for it.

It is supposed that three engines will be offered from the beginning of this car; Two plug-in hybrid models that match the 308 PHEV’s electric range at 40 miles, and a 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that makes 128 horsepower. All of these can be connected to an automatic transmission. By the end of 2023, the gasoline engine will be replaced by a hybrid unit, and although no date has been set, an e-408 electric motor is expected to follow.

Peugeot hopes to attract more enthusiasts with the launch of the Peugeot 408 as it is priced between the 308 and 3008 (the latter starting at £33,225), although it is more similar in length to the 508 sedan.

“Our customers may want more space but the same driving experience, or they may want a different car with a better driving experience, or they may want more modern sedans,” said Everly Bresson, 408 product manager. The common point of all these people is that they look for cars with an open mind and they are not attracted only by the performance of the car.

No danger threatens 508

The Peugeot 408 is more likely to compete with classic sedans than SUVs, so there is no risk for the 508. Phil York, Peugeot’s head of marketing, believes that the 508 is an icon for the brand. It is considered a very high level product.

Despite the Peugeot 508 PSE [PHEV عملکرد], the Peugeot 508 SW will meet the specific needs of the customer. Last year, Peugeot sold more than 1,200 508s in the UK, compared to 12,200 3008s, but Yorke suggested the 508 played a significant role in the market.

Questions and answers: Pierre-Paul Matti, Peugeot 408 project manager

It’s been seven years since the project started, weren’t you worried that the car was getting old?

We hope that someone else will not design this car because it is a great opportunity for us.

Why were the new Peugeot 308 and 408 built back to back?

Because we knew what the Peugeot 308 and 408 parts are, especially the front and rear light technologies. The grille of the cars was exactly the same. We designed the interior of the 408, then used it in the 308.

What was the biggest design challenge?

We knew that the design of the sedan would not be a classic. We designed it in such a way that it is both spacious and maintains its dynamism.

Why is the rear bumper of this car different from other Peugeots?

The rear bumper made the car look narrow, but it is not. It is very spacious. The color contrast of the body with this shield saved us.
