It’s been three years since Samsung launched Galaxy S Ultra phones with a 108 megapixel camera. Now this company is ready to release its next flagship with a 200 megapixel camera. In these three years, the Korean company has designed and produced several 200-megapixel lenses that have been used in the products of rival companies, including one of Xiaomi’s smartphones. According to reports, Samsung plans to use a 200-megapixel lens in the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera next year.
Like the 108-megapixel cameras of the Galaxy S21 Ultra or S22 Ultra phones, the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera does not use a 200-megapixel resolution by default. This handset takes 12.5 megapixel images using pixel binning. The mentioned technology is a process in which several small pixels are merged together and form a larger pixel. Using this feature increases the quality of captured images, especially in low light conditions. Of course, it will undoubtedly be possible to use 200 megapixel resolution in the phone, but unlike its competitors in this field, Samsung will remove the 50 megapixel option.
If this news is true, the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera user will have two options for imaging; The first option, which is by default, takes 12.5 megapixel images, which may not have a different quality than other cameras, but the amount of images taken does not take up much space in the handset’s memory. The second option will be 200 megapixel images, which has a lot to say in terms of quality, but the captured images will also have a large volume.
For a better comparison in this regard, we refer to the images taken by the Galaxy S22 Ultra phone. The images taken with the camera of this phone in 108 megapixel mode occupy 4 to 5 times more space than the images taken in 12.5 megapixel mode. Certainly, the size of the images that will be taken with the 200 megapixel mode will be far greater than the size of the 108 megapixel images.
The 50 megapixel mode, which we see in smartphones from companies like Xiaomi and Motorola, has an intermediate mode and both increases the quality of images and does not multiply their size. But apparently, Samsung will break the tradition in this field and there will be no 50 megapixel mode in the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera. This issue may not make much difference to normal users, but it will not be to the taste of professional photography enthusiasts with the phone camera.
Currently, none of the talks about the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera have been confirmed or denied by Samsung. However, as mentioned, the Korean company has the ability to produce 200 megapixel lenses, and the possibility of using it in one of its flagships is very high; Even if there is a lot of talk about the software part of this camera.
