Qualcomm unveiled its new 4nm chips for wearable devices



After releasing promotional teasers about its new chip over the past week, Qualcomm unveiled 2 new chips for wearable gadgets yesterday. In order to repeat the success of the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ platform, the American company has now unveiled the Snapdragon W5 generation 1 and Snapdragon W5 Plus generation 1 chips. Both chips are manufactured on the basis of the 4nm process and represent a significant improvement in the field of Qualcomm’s wearable platforms.

Qualcomm claims that the company’s new wearable chips are almost twice as efficient as the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ platform and use 50% less power. The W5 Plus chip can occupy 30% less space (compared to previous generation chips) and increase the battery charging time by 50% in common application scenarios. Qualcomm has been working closely with Google over the past months to optimize Wear OS with its new chip.


The main difference between the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5 Plus Gen 1 chips is that the non-Plus model lacks the AON co-processor. Qualcomm intends to release the Snapdragon W5 generation 1 chip for some special wearable gadgets; Because some gadgets do not need additional features to save energy. These gadgets include products that can be sold in the Chinese market, tools for children, the elderly, health centers and organizational sectors.

The Snapdragon W5 Plus 1st generation chip includes 4 Cortex A53 cores and a low-power Cortex M55 core with a frequency of 250 MHz. The A702 GPU with a frequency of 1 GHz is responsible for processing the graphics data. For comparison, it is interesting to know that the A504 GPU used in the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ chip has a frequency of 320 MHz. The memory configuration has also been updated and now supports LPDDR4 memories with a frequency of 2133 MHz. Also, the new machine learning unit known as U55 has also been added to the new chips.

The new co-processor in the Snapdragon W5 Plus 1st generation chip is able to do more processing in the background while consuming less power. All things related to the sensors are managed through the always-on AON co-processor with 22nm architecture. Thus, with the release of the Snapdragon W5 Plus 1st generation chip, things such as speech processing, sound playback and notifications can all be left to the auxiliary processor. Also, the AON chip will be able to activate low-power Bluetooth version 5.3, Wi-Fi, GNSS and support new energy management modes such as Deep Sleep and Hibernate. In addition, in order to establish an LTE connection, an updated modem with a low-power user mode has been used.

Qualcomm has announced that it has cooperated with Compel and Pegatron companies in order to produce reference smart watches with Snapdragon W5 Plus 1st generation chip, and in this way, it has helped to accelerate the development process of products by its business partners.

Mobvoi and Oppo are the first companies to launch their smartwatches with new Qualcomm chips. According to Qualcomm, there are currently 25 different smartwatch designs in production. Oppo is expected to officially unveil the Oppo Watch 3 at an event in August.
