Heic file is an image data storage format from technology High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). It uses to store higher quality images with less occupied space. Apple has shown great interest in this format in its products and this format is supported in almost every Apple device.
Apple’s iPhone and iPad take photos in the HEIF image format by default, and these photos have the HEIC file extension. Windows 10 or 11 can open HEIC files for you with just a few simple clicks. Of course, you can always convert them to the standard JPEG format and use them anywhere.

How to view HEIC files in the Windows 10 Photos app
In newer versions of Windows 10, you can install support for HEIC image files with just a few clicks. Of course, this method also works in Windows 11. First, find a HEIC file in File Explorer on your computer and double-click it. If you’re asked which app you want to open it in, choose Photos.
tip: If the HEIC file does not open in the Photos app, right-click the HEIC file and select Open With > Photos.
The Photos app tells you that “HEIF Image Extension is required to display this file.” Click the “Download and Install” link to get it from the Microsoft Store. It’s a free download and will only take a few moments to install.
Attention: You also need the “HEVC Video” plugin and this plugin usually costs $0.99. If this method doesn’t work or you don’t want to spend $0.99, we recommend downloading the free solution we cover later in the article instead.
When Windows asks you “Did you mean to switch apps?”, select “Yes”.
Doing so will open the HEIF Image Extensions page in the Microsoft Store app. Click the “Install” button to download and install support for HEIC image files (which use the HEIF format).
Now, when you open a HEIC image in the Photos app, you can view it like any other image file, such as JPEG, PNG, GIF, or BMP.
From now on, Windows 10 File Explorer will automatically generate and display preview images for your HEIC image files as well.
How to convert HEIC to JPEG on Windows
To quickly and easily convert HEIC files to standard JPG images on Windows, we recommend downloading and installing CopyTrans HEIC for Windows.
This tool installs full support for HEIC images in Windows, so it’s especially useful in Windows 7 and older versions of Windows 10 that don’t have built-in support in the Photos app. Adds support for HEIC images to Windows Photo Viewer.
CopyTrans HEIC also allows you to right-click a HEIC file in File Explorer and select “Convert to JPEG” to quickly and easily convert it to a JPEG file. Select that option and you’ll get a JPEG version of the image that will automatically be placed in the same folder as the original HEIC file.
JPEG files are supported by more apps and devices, so doing this conversion will help you use HEIC photos in apps that support JPEG images but not HEIC files.
How to open HEIC images in other programs
More programs support HEIC video files in the HEIF format. For example, Adobe Photoshop can now open these files, although you’ll need to install both the HEIF Image Extensions package mentioned above and the HEVC Video Extensions software.
We also recommend IrfanView as a great and simple image viewer. As the official IrfanView FAQ notes, IrfanView will open HEIC video files as long as you have either CopyTrans HEIC for Windows or the HEIF and HEVC packages installed.
For more information about HEIC support in your favorite image viewing or editing program, do a web search for its name and “HEIC.”
How to convert HEIC files to JPEG on the web
If you don’t want to install software, you can always use an online conversion tool. Just upload the HEIC file, wait, and finally you can download a JPEG file.
Warning: While the website below worked well for us, we strongly recommend against uploading any private photos (or documents or videos) to online tools for conversion. If the photo contains sensitive content, it is better to keep it on your personal computer. On the other hand, if the photo is not particularly problematic, uploading it to an online service is of no real concern. This is a general recommendation for any file type. For example, we recommend that you do not upload PDFs that contain sensitive financial or business data to online PDF conversion services.
If you just want to do a quick conversion, go to heictojpg and upload up to five photos at once. You can drag and drop one or more HEIC files from your computer to the web page.
The said website will convert those files to JPEG for you and you can download the resulting JPG files from the same page.
If you find working with HEIC files uncomfortable, you can configure your iPhone by default to take photos in the more compatible JPEG format. However, HEIC offers higher image quality at smaller file sizes. This is a more modern image format, and we recommend that you continue to use it if the programs you use support it.
