Google’s Android 14 operating system will support satellite connection and this news by Hiroshi Lockheimer; The vice president of platforms and ecosystems of Google was announced. By publishing a post on Twitter, he confirmed that the future version of Android can connect to the nearest satellite above the user’s head.

This tweet most likely refers to the latest collaboration between T-Mobile and SpaceX and shows that this telecommunications operator will use Starlink satellites to enable communication for handsets in areas without cellular network coverage. Experts hope that this service will be completely free for subscribers of the T-Mobile operator in popular plans. However, in the most optimistic case, the service is expected to be launched in late 2023.

“It is strange to think about the user experience of satellite-connected devices. When we released the first Android phone named G1 in 2008; It was difficult to work with Wi-Fi and 3G networks. Now we are designing satellite connectivity. It will be a pleasure for us to support our partners to activate all these features in the future version of Android.” – Hiroshi Lockheimer; September 1, 2022

At first, it seems that satellite connection capabilities will be limited to text messaging and basic support for some messaging apps. This phenomenon comes from the volume limitation of transferable data. However, in the not-so-distant future, users will probably be able to rely on satellites to send photos or even videos in areas without mobile network coverage.

Undoubtedly, future Android smartphones will need to use special hardware elements in order to access the wide satellite network in space. Android 14, or Android U, will likely be released in February or March 2023 as a beta version for eligible Pixel devices. Also, users will probably see the release of the official version of this operating system in August next year. As a reminder, it should be noted that Android 13 has already been released for Pixel devices, and gadgets manufactured by other brands will also benefit from it in the coming months.

Currently, satellite connection is expanding, and it is expected that Apple will unveil this feature in the iPhone 14 series and the Apple Watch series 8. According to the plans, the event to introduce new Apple products will be held on September 7 (16 September).
