Cooperation between Japan and America to develop 2nm chip manufacturing technology


The United States and Japan will establish a research center in Japan by the end of 2022 through a joint project. This center develops technologies related to mass production of chips using the 2nm process. In the future, this joint project will help companies to establish sustainable supply chains and secure themselves against possible tensions with the current leader of the chip manufacturing industry, Taiwan.

This center was opened in the form of a new research institute this year, and during a joint project, it plans to use the equipment and the participation of specialists from the National Center for Semiconductor Technologies in the United States. Initially, researchers from the two countries will focus on advanced chips based on the 2nm manufacturing process. This will improve performance and reduce energy consumption compared to current ideas. Also, this center will launch the production line of the prototype of 2nm chips. The ultimate goal of the said project is to start mass production of 2nm chips in Japan by 2025.


The plan to start the joint project between Japan and America in May by Koichi Hagiuda; Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and Gina Raimondo; The United States Secretary of Commerce was announced. Later, the parties discussed all the details. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (NIAIST), the Physical and Chemical Research Institute (Riken) and the University of Tokyo will participate in this project on behalf of Japan.

Taiwan now owns more than 90% of the production capacity of semiconductors with a scale smaller than 10 nm. Taiwanese companies are also aiming to produce 2nm chips by 2025. At the same time, some experts believe that Beijing is seeking to forcibly annex Taiwan Island to its territory. Undoubtedly, such a decision will not be accepted by the American government; Because most of the advanced chips used in this country are produced by Taiwanese companies.

After the research project is completed, the technologies will be transferred to other countries with shared American values, such as South Korea. This innovative action includes not only the field of technology but also financial support. In fact, one Japanese company could benefit from an investment worth 1 trillion yen ($7.3 billion).

Currently, the Taiwanese company TSMC is considered the largest producer of advanced chips in the world. The Korean company Samsung and the American company Intel are also in the next ranks. Also, the United States is considered the center of development of advanced microcircuits in the world. Qualcomm and Nvidia are among the leading players in this field. Also, Japanese companies Tokyo Electron, Screen Holdings, Shin-Etsu Chemical and JSR specialize in supplying equipment and raw materials needed for the production of microcircuits.

In the early 1990s, Japan’s share of the world semiconductor market was about 50%; But now this figure has decreased to 15%.
