Design and display

Asus seems to have taken inspiration from the design language used in Huawei and Apple handsets for the Zenfone 9. This smartphone has a metal frame and 2 giant circular holes on the back panel to house the camera sensors. This handset has a back panel and flat edges, and the 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones is also installed in its upper part. In front of the lower edge of the phone’s body, it hosts the speaker network, the USB Type-C port, the main microphone hole and the SIM card port. The volume keys and power button integrated with the fingerprint sensor are also located on the right edge of the smartphone body.

On the front, this handset uses a 5.9-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. This panel has a pixel density of 445ppi, a maximum brightness of 1100 nits (with a normal brightness of 800 nits), the ability to support the HDR10+ standard, 112% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space, and delta-E<1 color accuracy.

The front camera of the device is located in the spherical cavity built into the upper left corner of the display. This display has narrow edges on 2 sides; But the upper and lower edges of the screen have a considerable thickness.

The processing power of this smartphone is provided by an advanced Qualcomm chip known as Snapdragon 8 Plus 1st generation. This chip is produced based on TSMC’s 4nm process and has better performance and energy efficiency than Snapdragon 8 generation 1. This chip works alongside up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal memory.

The handset is equipped with an interesting touchpad around the power button that can be used for various purposes such as opening the notification drop-down menu, app shortcuts, camera and media controls. In addition, the built-in sensor on the back panel of the device allows users to tap on the back of the phone to launch the camera application, turn on the flash, record sound, call the Google Assistant voice assistant, and control media.

The ZenUI user interface on the Asus Zenfone 9 has been customized to enable one-handed use, and now supports smart gestures for sliding app shortcuts, camera settings, and more.

Even with its compact design, this smartphone uses a 4300 mAh battery with the ability to support 30W fast charging. Asus claims that it will take less than 30 minutes to charge this battery from 0 to 50%. Also, this handset is equipped with a pair of powerful stereo speakers and according to the company, the performance of these speakers will be comparable to the latest flagship devices. Finally, Asus Zenfone 9 is available to customers with an IP68 protection certificate to resist water and dust penetration.

In terms of optical features, Asus Zenfone 9 is equipped with a dual camera configuration on the back panel, including a 50-megapixel main sensor of the IMX766 type, a 6-axis Gimbal hybrid stabilizer, and EIS. The main camera sensor works next to a 2-megapixel ultra-wide lens (with Sony IMX363 sensor) with a 113-degree field of view. The ultra-wide camera also acts as a macro module.

The selfie camera installed on the front panel of the phone uses a 12 megapixel IMX663 sensor made by Sony. This camera supports fast autofocus. The main camera is capable of recording 8K videos at 24fps with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and 4K videos at 60fps with EIS capability. The 12-megapixel selfie camera also supports phased dual autofocus. Therefore, this camera is capable of recording selfies with high sharpness, recording 4K videos at 30 frames per second and recording 1080p videos at 60 frames per second.

Pricing and availability

According to Asus, the base model of Zenfone 9 equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory will be launched at a price of 799 euros. The details regarding the pricing of other models and also the time of release of this smartphone in the global markets have not been announced yet. This smartphone will be available in 4 colors: black, white, blue and red.
