A group of academic researchers looking to produce 5G antennas domestically

While we are going through the transition period from 4G to 5G technology, many advanced countries in the world have reached maximum 5G coverage, or at least many of their large and densely populated cities benefit from full 5G coverage.

But in developing countries like Iran, this process is much slower, we currently have less than 20 active 5G antennas in the country, and it seems that this technology will only be available in the big cities of the country for at least the next three years.

However, access to 5G technology requires the will of the authorities, the provision of the necessary hardware, the preparation of the infrastructure, and planning to exploit this technology. Considering the sanctions and the sick state of Iran’s economy, it seems that the provision of infrastructure hardware required for the development of 5G technology, such as fifth generation internet antennas, is expensive.

For this reason, an Iranian group at Khwaja Nasiruddin Tusi University has started building the first native 5G antenna in the country so that they can avoid the heavy costs of importing the necessary equipment and foreign exchange from the country in the future. Of course, in addition to economic goals, this event will cause the growth and development of technical knowledge inside Iran and the maximum utilization of motivated specialists and elites of the young generation.

The Academic Jihad Telecommunication Group of Khwaja Nasiruddin Tusi University, under the management of Ali Mokhtarani, is active on the project of building the first 5G antenna in the country. Mokhtarani believes that, considering the high turnover of the production of this type of antennas, the saving of foreign currency and the existence of its technical knowledge in the country, investing in the production line for the production of indigenous 5G antennas has an economic justification.

According to the director of this research team, Khwaja Nasiruddin Tusi University’s telecommunications department has so far produced several samples of new BTS antennas, including 4G antennas, and has the necessary experience to produce 5G antennas inside the country. In this context, he said: Our team has produced two 4G antennas, one of which has been installed in a crowded area and is being serviced. We find the newest 5G antenna in the world and implement a similar one in the university.

Mokhtarani explained about this project: We will unveil the prototype of the native 5G antenna by the end of summer, this antenna supports the previous generation technologies, i.e. 4G, 3G and 2G, and some of its raw materials are produced inside the country.

He explained about the financing of this project: We used our own budget for the construction of 5G antennas, Academic Jihad is a non-governmental organization and it must generate income by itself. The mobile phone operators did not help us financially either, although we have an agreement with the First Companion, according to which if the University Jihad succeeds in producing these antennas, the First Companion will provide the antennas it needs through us. Although it would have been better if this company helped us to produce samples.

The director of this research team regarding the estimates of the number and cost of building these antennas said: Based on the needs assessments, we need 20 thousand 5G antennas inside, if the cost of each antenna is 160 million tomans, a total budget of 3200 billion tomans is needed to buy this number of antennas. Of course, it is not clear how many will be ordered from us.
